No deal

Well, we had a deal for the sale of ACE.

We waited almost a week for it to be inspected to provide peace of mind to the new owners - even though it has just passed an interprovincial inspection last year and has full bumper to bumper comprehensive cover-absolutely-everything transferable (to new owners) and extendable warranty with 10,000km and 1 year left on it.

It was inspected Tuesday. What was supposed to be 1 hour took 3.5 hours and I was there when he got the results. They could not find anything wrong, even though they took it completely apart. Nothing.

We were to go to Nanaimo today to do the deal but he called last night and backed out. Apparently, a friend has an older RV and sold it to them cheap.

Just don't even know what to say about that.

We didn't even get a deposit because they seemed like the type you wouldn't need one from.

He told me last night that he was going to email the report over to us to help with finding a new buyer, we haven't received that as yet.

To say we're disappointed would definitely be an understatement. While we don't mind keeping her ourselves, its just frustrating to go through all the emotions of selling a prized possession for a week and a half and then ...

There was another buyer who wanted us to let him know if anything went wrong with the deal but, of course, that was 10 days ago. I sent a message to them late last night but have not heard back yet.

Should we have to start over - IF we start over and continue this journey of selling ACE, I will definitely be putting the price up as we learned through this that we listed it too low. Every cloud has a silver lining, I suppose.

Growth and RV Changes

Having a look around to see how things are growing:

Beginner grapes

About halfway to full size grapes

Beginner peach

About half way peach

Years ago Brad learned to make lasagna. He used to make tons at a time and give them away to our neighbours. Lately he has been making 12-15 and selling them with the profits going to the local food bank.

Veggie prep

The concoction

This is at the Nanaimo ferry harbour, some interesting facts in the right corner, click on the pic to enlarge.

Our lower deck - we have tomatoes, strawberries, carrots, dill and romaine going here. The veggie condoms are working fantastic!!! Also, we spray coffee on the vegetable garden and plants that the slugs love, it absolutely works, its cheap (no name coffee brand) and no pesticides. I assume the coffee covers the smell of the vegetables and therefore the slugs are not attracted. We spray every night but certainly must be sprayed after each rain.

In this container off the deck, we have purple and yellow onions, green onion, 1 carrot and 2 garlic. As we use lettuce or celery, the cut off is placed in this starter greenhouse to regrow and replant. Once the garden begins to 'fruit', we will just cut them off at the base, never removing them from the soil.

The tomatoe plants in the garden are quite large bushes

L-R: Celery, Green onion, Carrots, Peppers, Potatoes, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Lettuce and more Potatoes

The Broccoli was being devastated by slugs but we started using the coffee before they got to the heart of them and so while they still look terrible, they are alive and growing.

Lettuce doing well with coffee

Squash and Cucumber

One of two Broccoli devastated by snails

We lost an entire section of Romaine (save for one) before starting the coffee routine so these were planted later.

Dill almost 3ft tall

I was cleaning out a drawer and found a few different seeds we hadn't planted yet, so I got them going in a starter - probably too late, but worth the try.

This eagle was literally hovering over us, no wind down here but he was clearly riding something up there. Sat there for at least 3 minutes.

Freighter

We were having a crow problem at the cherry tree, Brad went down to 'fix' it but couldn't get a good shot off. A gathering of crows was circling above him and I was concerned they would attack him but instead, they obviously cottoned on and haven't been back for days now. Interesting.

I over pruned the tomatoe vine on the deck but we have plenty of new growth coming up and the main vine is doing very well, plenty of clusters on this beauty.

We have put our RV up for sale recently, I haven't posted about it yet because another blogger has also recently posted theirs for sale and as we are in no hurry, I chose to wait awhile. We have 6 people waiting to view her at the moment but Brad wanted to shine her up as she oxidized significantly while at the campground, in the end we chose to send it to someone to have it done. Today we will pick it up, clean it out and likely begin showing her tomorrow.

As we are no longer fulltime in her, and with Brad fed up with the tick tick, she is just sitting in a storage yard and I'm concerned about mice getting in. We've done all the bounce sheets/irish spring things which have worked in fields in Saskatchewan very well but long term they could get in and its such a fanatastic RV that someone should be using her. So, we decided to sell her and will likely get something small like a popup or boler for short camping trips. Presumably, we will be able to travel places sooner or later.

Ace has been a great investment for us and after 2.5 years, she certainly doesn't owe us anything. More on the sale later.

Hospital, Yard work and an Offer

I managed to pick up whatever bug this is going around - no doubt from Brad who was sick with it for 2 weeks... I only had it for a week but I had other complications it turns out... I just kept thinking it would get better eventually as it did for Brad, but I had symptoms Brad didn't have. Now keep in mind that many years ago I had a stroke and it took me 3 days to get to a Dr, I don't go to the Dr unless things are dire.

So Sunday night, having intended to go to the Dr on Monday morning I was in such a bad way that I had Brad take me to the ER at Royal University Hospital at 11pm. I hadn't slept for a week, hacking, blowing, unable to swallow. I was given some ice chips to help while I waited, after hours in the waiting room we got put into a room an hour later we said to hell with it... by now it was 3am and City Hospital ER opened at 5am, maybe they could help me. So I stopped by the desk to ask for another cup of ice chips before I left. The nurse assured me the Dr was coming momentarily so we returned to wait. Within 5 min he was there, same guy we'd seen wandering around the last several hours. He did get me sorted in short order and they took some blood work to CYA and sent me packing with a 4 day prescription to clear up my throat. It did.

RUH Emergency

While we were waiting to be seen in ER, Brad went out for a smoke (vape). He got to talking to a guy, turns out there is a thing about Vaping... if the nicotine level is too strong it can effect your throat. Monday morning, I researched and found this website with nicotine levels from a large assortment of cigarettes available in Canada. They don't print it on the package anymore!

I had been vaping at 18mg of nicotine for 3 weeks... most cigarettes come in around 10 - 14mg... oops. Knowing that the vape comes in 0mg, 6mg, 9mg and 18mg I realized that what I needed was 9mg so I went back to the vape shop and the same kid was working, I explained what had happened (he was the one who told us at a pack a day we would need the 18mg) and that it put me in the ER. Not in a nasty way, just so that he wouldn't make the same mistake and potentially kill someone down the line with nicotine poisoning.

Content with that, I started doing 9mg and blended the 18mg & 9mg for Brad giving him a 13.5mg. Yesterday I realized that I was low on the 1 bottle of 9mg I had so went back to the vape shop for another and I also wanted two 0mg to blend with the 18mg which would then give us more 9mg once Brad was ready to reduce again.

The Manager happened to be working so I explained to him what happened with the ER and too much nicotine, he advised he would be discussing it with the kid we dealt with. Again, not nasty just making sure the kid understood the importance of what he is selling and how it can affect a person's health. The Manager asked me a couple of questions and it turns out there are two different coils for these vape machines... a 0.60 and a 1.20... the .60 is for a straight to lung inhale (crazy to me) and the 1.20 is for more of a cigarette inhale (this is us). The kid sold us the .60's.... effectively turning our 18mg into 36mg!!!! Holy Mother of God! That's like 6 cigarettes in 1.... No wonder I got so damn sick and couldn't swallow.

The Manager has sorted us out and while Brad (and I) are not impressed that this happened, at least the problem was acknowledged and dealt with to save anyone else from being adversely affected.

We've been puttering around the yard here at Brad's Mum's while she has been away on vacation and got quite a bit of weeding done, put some grass seed down as the lawn was getting some bare patches and even touched up some staining on the deck. I've been too sick until Monday to do much of anything and with Brad's back/neck problems it was a very slow process.

We got an offer on our house!!!!!!!!!!!!

Late Monday we received an offer from our Realtor for our house that we have on the market. So excited! Anyway, it was low as you might imagine (well we expected it anyway, because of the state of the market in our locale), so we have countered. We are waiting to hear back from them as they made the offer and then had to leave on a business trip abroad. Their realtor assures our realtor that he will be able to contact them once they have arrived at their destination and that they are expecting a counter.

Meanwhile another woman was checking out our house so our neighbour took her in to see it. She loved it and apparently intends to contact our realtor to have a proper viewing with her husband.

None of this changes anything until it does obviously, but its a glimmer of hope and after everything we've been dealing with, we'll take it. So nice to get some good news for a change. I've even gone so far as to start thinking of what we will do once the house sells.... no spoilers though.

Incidentally, Brad started his new medication about a week and a half ago and all is well on that front.

No longer selling, 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ / RV Toad

Currently in Aguanga, California (1 hour West of Palm Springs)

So it turns out, though we didn't know it at the time, that our Jeep has been lifted. By lifted I mean raised, not stolen. The Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) will not accept ANY vehicle which has had ANY modification. We were in the process of sorting out the paperwork for Customs and after finding out we did not need a 'Compliance Letter' except to bring a Canadian Vehicle to the USA, getting our 'Recall Letter' from Jeep, digging out our 'Certificate of Title' and the 'Bill of Sale'.... We then moved on to Modifications...

We didn't think our Jeep had had any modifications but when I was looking at 'Stock' photos of the Jeep online, I noticed they seemed to sit lower than ours. So today we drove over to a Jeep dealership and had them take a look. YUP, Lifted.

He suggested a place where we could have it lowered but also mentioned that if we had it lowered the tires would likely rub.... so we'd be looking at a $ couple grand $. Given the price of Jeep's back 'home', we have decided to try and sell her - before we leave. Not a lot of time.... So if you or someone you know is looking for a reliable Jeep by all means, Please, let us know.

All fluids changed Oct/17.

A day out Jeeping in the Arizona Desert

This Jeep is in great shape, we had all the fluids changed out the day we bought her in October and we put Brand new tires on her a week later, she also got a brand new (soft top) lid at Xmas and she has side rails.. Her power comes from a 4 cylinder, 6 speed, 2.4L engine. Sale includes tow bar for towing her behind an RV (about $3000 value). She has 72,131 miles. Jeeps were designed for towing I'm told, making this the perfect Toad.

Asking price: $12,500 obo (ono)

She is a fantastic Jeep and we had every intention of importing her to Canada but this ridiculous CBSA rule is making that too complicated.

We will be actively trying to sell her over the next few weeks, baring that - we will likely just leave her here at our site and either use it stateside only or sell it next season when we come down.

As any Jeeper will know, this has been very disappointing and upsetting to us but hopefully we can find a buyer who will keep her at her best. We will just have to buy one back 'home' when we return.

Pictures of her taken today:
